No, they aren’t animated characters. They are human beings who were made to wear body suits. “The design of the characters is such that one gets fooled into thinking it is animation,” shrugs Rao, which was indeed the very illusion that had to be created. “In a sense, it is ‘live’ animation!” he quips, referring to the fact that it was all shot live.

Prakash Varma, ad filmmaker, Nirvana Films, has directed the commercials, and reveals that the Zoozoos were a big challenge to create. The practical aspects of how they will move, talk, gesticulate and emote were very important. Essentially, costume design and artwork were crucial elements.

“It took me three weeks of pre-production to understand how it will work,” says Varma. There were two fabrics that were considered for the body suits, and one was rejected for it had too many wrinkles and was shiny. The wrinkles would have shown when the characters moved, thereby shattering the illusion of animation. “So we chose the more practical, thicker fabric,” Varma explains.

The production team divided the outfit into two parts: the body and the head. The body part of the outfit was stuffed with foam in some places, while the head was attached separately. To make it look bigger than a human head, a harder material called Perspex was used, which in turn was stuffed with foam (with scope for ventilation).

If one wishes to understand the size of this head, here’s a fact: a human head would typically reach up to the mouth level of this giant Zoozoo head. “We kept the hands and legs thin, which is why we cast women – and occasionally children – wearing the costumes,” says Varma. The thin limbs, contrasted with big bellies and a bulbous head, all add to the illusion that these creatures are ‘smaller’ than humans. Sets were created to suit the size of the Zoozoos.

Cinematically, this ‘size’ was a trick: the creatures look smaller than they actually are on screen, to portray a different world of sorts. For this, the speed of shooting was altered: Nirvana shot it in a high-speed format to make them look the size that they do.
Furthermore, simple sets/backdrops were created and spray painted with neutral Greys – a colour of choice so that attention isn’t diverted from the main characters. For a supposedly ‘outdoor’ shot, even the shadow of a Zoozoo was kept ‘live’ and not done in post production: it was painted in a darker shade of grey on the ground. An even lighting was maintained throughout.

There was virtually no post production work done.

The films were shot by Nirvana in Cape Town, South Africa, with the help of a local production house there, called Platypus. Incidentally, the same combination of people also worked on the ‘Happy to Help’ series last year. When asked whether Cape Town is fast becoming a tourist spot for Vodafone and Nirvana, Varma laughs, saying, “Oh no! It’s just that we are very comfortable with the team there and know what sort of work to expect from them.”
Nagpal adds here that the production cost had to be minimal for unveiling such a large number of commercials. “Otherwise, our production costs would exceed media spends,” he quips.

Google Acquiring Twitter for More Than $250 Million Valuation?

Either Google is acquiring Twitter this week or Michael Arrington is desperate for traffic and stirring up rumors. I think that given the buzz around the Twitter Google news, the former is in the making. Arrington posts on TechCrunch that two trusted sources have confirmed that Google and Twitter are in talks for Twitter to be acquired by the search and communications company.

If this is accurate, it’s a brilliant deal for Google - the value of Twitter is only going to go up over time. And it will be Twitter founders Evan Williams and Biz Stone’s second sale to Google - they sold Blogger to them just five years ago. But there’s one big question - where’s Microsoft in all this? Letting Twitter go to Google only hurts them, badly, in the long term search game. This is an asset they need to be competing for aggressively.

Of course, there are sound connections between Stone, Williams and Google, as the same team behing Twitter launched and sold Blogger to Google close to 5 years ago. I was under the opinon however that another Google acquisition of a Stone Williams property was never to happen again. We’ll have updates on this rumor throughout that day.

Microsoft Expands Online Business Services Trial To 19 More Countries, Signs GlaxoSmithKline

Starting today, Microsoft is extending the availability of its hosted productivity and collaboration services to 19 additional countries, most of them European but also in some key markets like Canada, Japan and New Zealand.

The company’s Business Productivity Online Suite, part of Online Services, is now available for trial in all of those countries (see below for details) after being made available to U.S. businesses last November, but only up to 20 users. Full commercial availability of BPOS is coming in April.

What does the suite include?

- Exchange Online (messaging service)
- SharePoint Online (intranet / portal solution)
- Office Communications Online (unified communications platform)
- Office Live Meeting (web-based conferencing application)

NetworkWorld offers a good overview of expected pricing in the UK, Europe and Asia based on current U.S. pricing. The suite is now available in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Microsoft also got a big enterprise customer to boast about together with the worldwide release of the services suite: healthcare company GlaxoSmithKline has signed a multi-year contract with the Redmond-based software giant, who will install the Business Productivity Online Suite and the Deskless Worker Suite (a limited suite for workers who only access business services infrequently) on 100,000 desktops worldwide under the agreement. GSK expects to be able to cut IT operational costs by roughly 30% of what they’re spending now.

Slowly but surely, Microsoft is moving its traditionally license-based productivity software online, in an effort to broaden the scope for the most profitable part of its business. It will be interesting to see if and how this will affect the company’s bottom line in the years to come.

Bollywood's A.R. Rahman won Oscars for original score and original song in Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" on Sunday, becoming the first Indian composer to strike gold at the annual Hollywood awards.

"Slumdog," which tells of a young man looking for love and competing for money on the Indian version of the television game show "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire", scooped up eight Oscars, including best motion picture.

Rahman, 43, won the Original Song Oscar for 'Jai Ho'.

"Before coming, I was excited and terrified," Rahman said when accepting his Academy Award.

"Last time I felt like that was during my marriage," he added.

Rahman had also been named best composer at the Golden Globes last month.

Known for his musical versatility -- from romantic compositions to foot-tapping numbers, Rahman has innovated with different instruments and sounds to create some of India's best-known musical hits for nearly two decades.

Despite earlier international credits such as the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical "Bombay Dreams", it is Rahman's work on British director Boyle's "Slumdog" that endeared him to Western critics.

Given the volatile situation (political and natural) around most countries, I totally buy the idea of having an emergency phone around my space. Recent incidents of carnages and natural disasters imply that even a simple shopping, holiday or business trip can take an ugly turn instantaneously. This doesn't mean that we stop traveling; it simply means we arm ourselves better.

The Disposable Pre-Paid Phone could be that life-saving device, which could get you out of a sticky situation. Microsoft to Layoff 17% of Staff?

I know it’s not so nice to usher in the first day of the new year with such a bad news. But hey, everybody is talking about it and Fudzilla broke the news. It looks like the rumored Microsoft layoff may actually push through. And it even already has a date - January 15th.

Microsoft staff are said to have been informed already that the major layoff will actually happen and that the company is already preparing to implement the massive layoff, totalling to around 15,000 Microsoft employees worldwide. That equates to almost 17% of the total Microsoft employees all over the world.

What is not confirmed though is in which departments or regions those employees would come from. Although, there have been rumors that it could come from Microsoft’s office in the EMEA regions. Another rumor is that most of those employees would also come from MSN. Those who are well assured of not getting affected by the mass layoff would certainly be employees in Microsoft’s console sales, since the Xbox 360 although not as good as the Nintendo Wii, still manages to get a fair share of the console market.

Interestingly, the date when the layoff will be announced is set to happen a few days before Microsoft reports on its Q2 earning report.

Google Adding Video Chat to GMail, GTalk Next?

Google has announced that users of their GMail email and chatting service will soon have the option to chat and converse with friends via a new video chatting service which will take on Skype and other video conferencing tools head on as Google moves to further define itself as an all rounded media company and not just a search engine.

Here’s a video explanation of the service from Serge of Google :

Gmail users who install the GMail Video Plugin can now pull up an expandable video screen and communicate with other GMail users who have webcams. No word yet from Google on whether the option will be available for GTalk users.

GTalk is the Google messenger tool which already offers crisp VOIP audio services for its users and archives chats in the GMail interface. Will Google also be archiving video sessions in its index?

Back in 2005 we covered that Festoon had launched a Video Plug-in for GTalk, funny that its taken the company 3 years to get their own service going. Well, better late than never :) I’m sure many Googlers and Gmail users will be making good use of the new GMail Video Chat.

Google Moderator launches

Here’s a fun link for you. Google just released a free service called Google Moderator. This is a port to Google App Engine of an existing tool we use all the time at Google. Internally it was called Dory (after the fish who asked questions all the time in Finding Nemo).

What does Google Moderator do? When we have tech talks or company-wide meetings, it lets anyone ask a question and then people can vote up the questions that they’d like answered. The user interface looks like this:

My team uses it often at Google, e.g. it’s great for prioritizing which questions are most important.

I like that Google is in many ways turning itself inside out by taking many of our internal tools and making them available to the world. We use tools such as Gmail and Google Docs all the time in-house to share information, presentations, and docs. Guido van Rossum recently announced that a version of Mondrian, our internal code review tool, is available for the outside world to use. Now Google Moderator is another tool that anyone can use. Projects such as Google Code and Google App Engine make it even easier to share code or applications with the world. And releasing low-level tools such as protocol buffers or high-level tools such as Google Web Toolkit makes life easier for lots of developers.

Google is not the only company that does this, of course. Yahoo for example has their excellent Yahoo User Interface Library, Yahoo Pipes, or YSlow. Its just nice when companies release code or tools that benefit lots of people on the web.

At any rate, give Google Moderator a whirl. You can create your own “series,” which lets people ask and vote on questions. Who knows, maybe we’ll try to find a way to use Google Moderator the next time we do a webmaster chat. Oh, and Google Moderator is a free service, so give it a try sometime.

The Google doodle tradition started a long time ago (in summer 1999, in fact) when Larry and Sergey put a stick figure on the homepage to signify that they were out of the office at Burning Man. Nothing against stick figures, but our logo designs have become rather more varied since then. Today you'll see a special design that commemorates our 10th birthday. We've incorporated a little bit of history by using the original Google logo from 1998. And since everyone keeps asking what we'd like for our birthday (besides cake and party hats) -- the first thing we thought of was a nice new server rack.

And even though they can be extremely annoying, there is one inescapable fact: the most irritating thing about Facebook is the 100m-strong army of people who use it.

When was the last thing you looked at your feed without someone posting an embarrassing picture, or someone else saying something irritating in their status update?

Here are the top 15 things you should never do on Facebook or MySpace:

1. Use Facebook mail instead of proper email Are you silly? When you Facebook mail me, I have to log into my real email to find that I then have to go and log into my Facebook account to read and reply to your message. If you've got my real email address, please use it.

2. Add old friends and then forget about them This is the biggest social networking crime of them all. How many times has it happened? You haven't seen someone for 20 years; you vaguely recognise their name but not their face. They add you as a friend on Facebook and then after you accept them, you never hear from them again.

3. Adding people you don't even know It's one thing to add an old friend and then never speak to them. It's another to add anyone whose name you kind of vaguely sort of recognise. It's like that old man in the pub who slaps everyone on the back as if they were old pals, when in actual fact he has no friends, largely because of this habit.

4. Adding single-serving holiday friends Some people just don't understand that the exchanging of email addresses at the end of a holiday is just a social ritual and is absolutely not an invitation to add you to Facebook and then turn up unannounced at your house three months later.

5. Accepting friend invitations from people you don't know It's one thing to complain about irritating people adding you on Facebook, but if you accept those invites, you've only got yourself to blame. If you scan through your Facebook friends list, you'll doubtless find a handful of people in there you barely know. It's a horrible realisation - like when you suddenly realise your hand is resting on a knob of someone else's chewing gum underneath a desk.

6. Update Facebook profile when you're supposedly ill How many times have we seen it? Someone calls in sick in the morning and then updates their Facebook profile minute-by-minute throughout the day, documenting a day of ice cream, chips, video games and jumping on the bed. Get dressed and get to work you lazy hoodwink, or else you'll probably be fired. And it'd be your own fault for adding your boss to be your Facebook friend.

7. Write on a wall instead of communicating privately The driving force behind the success of Facebook is... vanity. People love the idea that others are watching what they're doing. Tell me this: for what reason would you invite someone to a private party by writing on their wall, other than to show off to all the people on their friends list who you don't want to come? It just makes you look like a tit, so don't do it.

8. Moan in your Facebook status The most annoying thing that people do on Facebook is to spray their walls with vanity-filled drivel, by posting self-indulgent awfulness in their status updates. "Kerry is sorry how it ended but it had to be done. I love you and will miss you, and I hope you can apologise one day". Oh sod off. If you've got something to say to someone, say it. Don't post it on your wall because no one else is interested, and people just think you're a prat.

9. Other irritating status updates No, "Dave is" is not an acceptable status update, nor is it original or in any way clever. "Dave just is..." is equally as inexcusable. And "Dave is Dave is Dave" is downright taking the piss. Oh, and song lyrics are also a no-no. "Sandra was happy in the haze of a drunken hour, but heaven knows she's miserable now" will impress people about the same amount as Morrissey's saggy, miserable face.

10. Upload drunken pictures the morning after Have a little common sense. If you go out for a big one on a Wednesday night, posting humiliating, drunken photos of your friends on Thursday morning is a recipe for disaster. Because when I call in sick at 9am, the last thing I want my boss to say is: "I've seen the pictures of you crawling in the gutter last night. I'm not amused or impressed, now get to work!"

11. Joining ridiculous chain-mail groups Why do people insist on joining groups such as "On the X of May, everyone has to panic buy carrots"? Come on people, how stupid are you? There's one group on Facebook devoted to nullifying the vegetarian moral crusade, and it's called: "For every animal you don't eat, I'm going to eat three". That's a good group name. "I think Ryan Seacrest is the best presenter ever" is not.

12. Starting said groups Enough said.

13. Lazy grammar and spelling mistrakes Reading Facebook is like perusing a six-year olds' English copybook. Come on, people: 'Your' is 'your'. 'You are' is 'you're'. It really isn't hard to get that little one right. And understanding the difference between there, their and they're surely isn't too much of a challenge?

14. Upload photos to Facebook and deleting originals Uploading photos to Facebook can be a very handy way of sharing your holiday snaps. But for the love of God, don't lose your originals. Facebook is terrible at compressing and resizing images - it turns your 14MP panoramas into 14KB monstrosities. Facebook is not a suitable repository to store your precious photos!

And as for bus lines, well, forget about it! This lead us to the fundamental goal of the Google Transit project: make public transit information as easy to find as any other geographic information."

Envato Launches Theme Marketplace For Your Blog

Envato, a company that operates a set of marketplaces for digital goods, tutorial sites, and a handful of other “projects,” announced that it has launched a new service that will let you buy and sell Web templates for your Wordpress blog and just about any other CMS in existence.

Dubbed ThemeForest, the service runs off the engine that powers the company’s Flash and royalty-free music loops marketplaces. Items on ThemeForest sell for $10 to $50, depending on the quality of the theme and the developer’s greediness and the library currently has 150 themes in place. The site said that its membership tally is already 75,000, but that’s because the same username is used across all of the company’s marketplaces.

In an attempt to make it easier to buy the templates, users can deposit cash on any of Envato’s three sites and that money can be used on any of the others.

So far, ThemeForest offers a healthy amount of nice themes, but can it really compete with Wordpress itself? There are a slew of themes already in the wild and it’s debatable whether people want another marketplace to buy anymore.

LinkedIn To Launch Its Own Ad Network

At a time when most social networks are still trying to figure out how to make money from advertising, one social network is bucking the trend. LinkedIn, the social network for business professionals, has so much demand from advertisers that it will be launching its own ad network on Monday. In conjunction with ad network Collective Media (which targets high-end media sites), LinkedIn will let other select sites target its users when they visit those partner sites.

Most social networks have a hard time selling ads at more than $1 CPMs (cost per thousand impressions), but LinkedIn’s rate card shows display ads starting at $30 CPMs and going up to $76.50. Text ads range from $12 to $20 CPMs. Even with the regular discounting from the rate card that many advertisers might recieve, LinkedIn is still doing much better than most social networks. That is because it has a more desirable audience that advertisers want to reach.

LinkedIn claims 27 million registered users. According to comScore, 5.2 million from the U.S. visited the site in July (8.7 million worldwide). LinkedIn claims that the average household income of its members is $110,000, 64 percent are male, the average age is 41, and 49 percent are decision makers. (In contrast, the average Wall Street Journal reader, according to LinkedIn, makes $102,000 per household, is 48 years old, and only 40 percent are business decision makers).

iPhone App Downloads to Hit 1 Billion Mark Faster Than Songs Did

There may only be over 12 million iPhones in the wild, but that hasn’t stopped iTunes users from downloading more than twice as many apps as songs during the store’s first two months of availability, according to a report.

Steve Jobs said at Apple’s press event last week that users have now downloaded over 100 million apps. Assuming it maintains the same rate of 70 million app downloads it witnessed in August alone, it could hit 1 billion apps by the end of the store’s first year of availability. iTunes song downloads didn’t hit the 1 billion mark until its second year of availability.

Google Ramps Up Mobile Search With My Location

Google on Thursday announced that it has used its Gears Geolocation API to make searching for businesses and locales in your area easier on Windows Mobile devices.

According to the company, Search with My Location approximates your location based on Cell ID technology already employed by Google Maps and returns businesses in that area. If you’re looking to find the best Italian restaurants in your area, you can input “Italian restaurants” into the Search field, and it will return a list of Italian restaurants around your location. But it goes beyond businesses and restaurants. Google said that if you want to know the forecast where you are, simply type in “weather” and it will return the weather for your area.

On the appointed day he led his followers to the top of a hill so they could be delivered to heaven. A few hours later, with the world very much intact, he hurried down the hill and had to be locked in a local prison for his own protection.

Oct 22 1844 - Millerites, followers of the American Baptist preacher William Miller, became convinced that the end of the world had been predicted in Daniel 8:14. After a few false dawns, the date was set as Oct 22 1844. That day is now known, for obvious reasons, as the Great Disappointment. Most Millerites subsequently rejected their faith.

1914 – Jehovah’s Witnesses have now stopped predicting exact dates for the end of the world after a string of high-profile failures. Charles Taze Russell, who founded the Watch Tower magazine, calculated that Jesus Christ would impose his rule on earth in 1914. The outbreak of the First World War seemed to lend support to his Armageddon prediction, but there was no Second Coming.

1969 – Charles Manson believed that simmering racial tensions in the US would erupt into an Apocalyptic race war, after which his band of criminals – the “Manson Family” – would rule the world. When no race war erupted, his gang began a killing spree to “show the blacks how to do it”. Manson is currently serving life for murder.

1980s – The US evangelist Hal Lindsey believed that Armageddon would follow the expansion of the EU into a 10 country United States of Europe ruled by the Antichrist. He never set a date for the end of the world but hinted that a final battle between good and evil was imminent. He still broadcasts his biblical prophecies on evangelist networks.

Sept 11-13 1988 - Former Nasa engineer Edgar Whisenant sold 4.5 million copies of his book 88 Reasons Why the Rapture Could Be in 1988, mostly to evangelical US Christians. Follow-up works, which revised the prediction for dates in the 1990s, failed to sell as well.

1993 - David Koresh and more than 100 followers barricaded themselves into the Branch Davidian ranch in Waco, Texas, to await the end of the world. They were surrounded by the FBI in a 51-day siege that was only ended by a fire that killed 76 of those inside, including Koresh.

Match 1997 – Members of UFO cult Heaven's Gate believed that the appearance of the Hale-Bopp comet signaled that the Earth was due for imminent destruction. The only way to “survive” the end of the world was to commit suicide so their souls could board a spaceship travelling behind the comet. The bodies of 38 devotees were found in a house in California on March 26.

Jan 1 2000 – Dozens of Christian cults predicted the turn of the millennium would coincide with the Second Coming of Christ and the end of the world. Concerns that the Y2K computer bug would collapse computer systems stoked an atmosphere of impending doom. But, as ever, life went on as normal. Carlos Roa, the Argentine goalkeeper who declined to negotiate a new contract at his Spanish club because he was convinced the world would end, returned later in the season.

May 2008 – Thirty-five members of a cult called the True Russian Orthodox Church spent six months in a cave in anticipation of the apocalypse predicted by their leader Pyotr Kuznetsov. They began to emerge from their makeshift underground home after the roof began to collapse in March. Kuznetsov, who never accompanied his followers into the cave, has been ordered to undergo psychiatric treatment by a Russian court.

What will the Large Hadron Collider really do for us?

Besides potentially revealing the underlying structure of the universe - including, perhaps, the elusive Higgs boson, the nature of dark energy and whether superstrings exist - the LHC project will show us how to manipulate vast amounts of data, in precisely the way that we will have to in the coming decades as we try to do more complex, distributed computing.

After all, lots of people know that the world wide web came out of Cern, which is home once again to a particle collider project. But not many people know why the web was invented there. It was, lest we forget, because in 1989 Tim Berners-Lee, while working there, needed a manageable way to support the documentation required for Cern operations. Big servers with long directories didn't do the job; nor did Gopher or Archie, early tools that did internet searching long before Google was a glint in anyone's eye. So Berners-Lee implemented a hypertext system that would let people dig as deep as they needed to in the web of documents for the collaborative project.

And today, we have a world wide web of documents and pages; arguably, every penny invested by our governments in Cern has paid off - just not in particle physics. Instead, it's been repaid through the utility of the web, and the productivity enhancements and economic growth it has enabled.

Now, the LHC experiments are taking the next step. They will generate - once it's tuned and working - 2 gigabytes of data every 10 seconds, and will need to be able to store 2.2 petabytes (million gigabytes) of fresh data every year. Google processes 20 petabytes of data a day, mostly through its map applications, according to the High Scalability blog (bit.ly/lhc01); but that's slightly different from adding such vast amounts, as Cern is doing.

What's more important is that, just as with the web, Cern is making its methods and programs available for free under the open source LGPL licence, and its computing model - enabling anyone who wants to build the next Google to do so with ease.

But while that's unlikely, what the LHC will probably bequeath to organisations that want to learn from it is an object lesson in safely storing and then processing huge amounts of data spread all over the world.
